Westmorland Pubs
Real Ale Pubs in Westmorland Branch Area
Our area comprises the old County of Westmorland plus certain
parts of West Yorkshire encompassing areas surrounding Dent
and Sedbergh.
Currently these are the Pubs in our Branch area that sell
at least one cask conditioned beer. Inclusion on the list
is no indication of the quality of beer or an affinity for
the aims of CAMRA. The position is obviously constantly changing;
we would very much appreciate it if any visiting members who
find errors would email us with their comments. We have a large
geographical area and even with a fine nucleus of dedicated
members we cannot always keep in touch with all situations.
New Cumbria Real Ale Guide
A new
Cumbria Real Ale Guide was officially launched on Monday 18th
February 2008 by Ian Stephens,
Chief
Executive, Cumbria Tourism, at the award-winning Pheasant Inn at
Bassenthwaite Lake.
The Guide,
appropriately known to those involved in its production as
‘CRAG’, is the result of visits and surveys by Cumbrian members
of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. The launch event was
attended by Editor Jim Chapple and a number of the contributors,
as well as licensees and brewers from at least 15 of Cumbria’s
breweries. The full
colour 200
page pocket-sized Guide lists all premises in Cumbria which
serve real ale to the public, and will contain 581 pub entries.
The
last edition of CRAG, published in 2005, was highly commended by
CAMRA. The new Guide will be the most comprehensive listing of
real ale pubs and bars covering the whole of Cumbria; it will be
indispensable to visitors to the Lake District but also ideal
for Cumbrian residents seeking out that hidden gem of a pub.
Now
that the guide is some five years old although much of it is
still a very good guide to the many pubs who continue to serve
real ale there has naturally been significant changes over
these past years. Of particular
interest is the Breweries section, which gives detailed
information on each of the 23 breweries now operating in Cumbria, including beer listings and tasting notes. Cumbria now
has more breweries per head of population than any other county
in Britain, and the
current number has rocketed up to some.
Here in the old Westmorland county area we have gone from 4
breweries as indicae4d in the guide to seven, all serving fine
ales and there are more in the
pipeline!
Because the guide is
beginning to age we have now reduced the price from £4.50 to
just £2.
